The week of September 17 - 23 is U.S. Constitution Week across the nation.
Mayor Tom Rowland recently signed a proclamation to observe the week locally as well.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress in 1955 to adopt a national week of observance, said Ocoee DAR Regent Laura Llyod Boyd. Congress adopted the National Society DAR resolution and on August 2, 1956 President Eisenhower signed it into public law. Since then the DAR has proudly honored the U.S. Constitution on this week each year, Boyd said.
The proclamation signed by Mayor Rowland notes the U.S. Constitution is "the guardian of our liberties" and "embodies the principles of limited government in a Republic dedicated to the rule of law."
The proclamation says September 17 marks the 229th anniversary of the framing of the U.S. Constitution.
