  • Elected Mayor of the City of Cleveland in 1991 and is currently serving his sixth term and is the longest serving mayor in the history of Cleveland with 26 plus years. Longest sitting Mayor in Tennessee.

  • Listed in the Congressional Records of the 110th Congress, making history as Cleveland’s longest serving mayor.

  • Past President of the Tennessee Municipal League, twice.

  • Serves on two standing committees of the United States Conference of Mayors:  the Police & Social Justice Committee and The Commission on Arts & Recreation.

  • Is Past President of the East Tennessee Mayors Association.

  • He served for 22 years on the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, the last 15 years as vice chairman, the highest position you can hold and not be on the state legislature.

  • Board member of the Tennessee Risk Management Pool and vice Chairman of the Tennessee Municipal Bond Fund.

  • He is co-founder of Cleveland 100, an organization that assist surviving family members of officers, firemen and emergency personnel killed in the line of duty.

  • He spearheaded a project to build Tennessee’s first memorial to fallen police, fire and rescue personnel in this community—the Emergency Services Memorial was dedicated in May of 2000 at Five Points.

  • A veteran of the United States Air Force, he retired as a Colonel from the Tennessee State Guard.

  • He is an executive committee member of Southeast Tennessee Development District and serves on the Cleveland Utility Board, executive board of the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council, and Industrial Development Board.

  • Member of the Tennessee State Rail Advisory Commission.

  • Past chairman and member of the Tennessee Vocational Rehabilitation Board

  • Member of the, Keep America Beautiful Board, Emergency Shelter Board, 911 Board, United Way Board, Greenway Board, Volkswagen Task Force, TN Veterans Home Council and many others.

  • Only Mayor in Tennessee serving on the Homeland Security Council.

  • Selected Mayor of the Year, 2004 by the Tennessee Municipal League.

  • Chairman of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).

  • In October, 2009, he was named Tennessee’s Community Leader of the Year. 

  • Recently inducted into the SAR.

  • He and wife, Sandra, attend First Baptist Church.
